Pilates, AKA Contrology

Mar 04, 2025

Sip of the Week: Today Emily, my beautiful Pilates mentor and friend, breaks down the history of this trending movement practice known as Pilates. You will learn so much about the origins, the creator himself, and what we consider to be Pilates in 2025. As well as why anyone and everyone should be practicing Pilates, and how it goes way beyond a class setting. Emily is a wealth of wisdom, and I am confident by the end of today's tea you are going to sign up for a class if you are not already Pilates obsessed. Listen now for the 411 on Pilates (AKA Contrology).

Let it Brew: Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a German-born physical trainer who believed in the power of controlled, intentional movement to build strength, flexibility, and resilience. Originally called "Contrology," Pilates designed his method to help himself and fellow inmates during World War I. Later, he refined it while working with dancers and athletes in New York, emphasizing core strength, breath, and mind-body connection. Today, Pilates is recognized as a powerful practice for enhancing mobility, improving posture, and reducing stress—a true full-body, functional movement system.
